Future-proofing the Northern Powerhouse

Future-proofing the Northern Powerhouse

To celebrate the opening of our new Manchester office, Ricardo hosted a cross-sector workshop on building a resilient and sustainable Northern Powerhouse.

We have made recordings of the workshops available for those that couldn't attend or who want to re-watch any of the presentations. If you would like to ask any questions about the event or Ricardo's work in general, please submit your query via the contact form at the side of this page and one of our experts will be in touch shortly.

We were also pleased to use the workshop as an opportunity to support Contact Hostel, one of Ricardo's nominated charities. Contact provides care, support and accommodation for girls and women who are homeless around the Manchester area. To find out more about their work, visit http://www.contacthostel.co.uk/

Biodiversity in an Urban Environment
Lisa Peirce

As one of the most urbanised nations in the world, towns and cities in the UK will continue to play a vital role in either damaging or improving our natural heritage. Many wildlife species have adapted to the urban environment, and others can be encouraged through careful planning and design. The first step is to understand the current biodiversity resource and to identify constraints and risks to biodiversity posed by urban development.

Energy markets are undergoing major change. At the same time, new housebuilding and commercial developments are creating significant opportunities to put in place new models for energy supply that can create a range of local economic and social benefits. Ricardo is at the forefront of implementing these new energy supply models. Paul Maryan shares our experience and give examples of what can be achieved.

Air quality, HRA and Planning
Ben Stansfield & Mark Broomfield

As well as ensuring that there are no significant impacts on air quality in existing and proposed Air Quality Management Areas, recent case law makes it essential for development plans to ensure that potential impacts on Natura 2000 habitat sites are robustly assessed, both on their own merits and in combination with other plans and projects. Ben and Mark outline how their teams deploy regional-scale air quality modelling tools to carry out this process, identify any areas where mitigation is needed, deal with in-combination impacts, and work with local authorities to deliver appropriate solutions
