New report by Ricardo Energy & Environment highlights potential tenfold increase for UK compostable plastic packaging market by 2025

  • ‘Plastics in the Bioeconomy’ report outlines how compostable plastics can help achieve the UK Plastics Pact (UKPP) target of 100% of plastic packaging being reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025.
  • Greater adoption of compostable packaging could boost the UK bioeconomy by at least £267m.
  • The UK has an abundance of renewable bioresources that could supply the biochemicals needed to produce low-carbon biopolymers for the compostable packaging market in a sustainable manner.
  • Growth in compostable packaging can reduce the significant investment required in the UK’s creaking recycling infrastructure, which is required to meet UKPP targets.

A new report, commissioned by the Biomass Biorefinery Network (BBNet) and authored by Ricardo Energy & Environment, has highlighted the major potential for compostable packaging in the UK, with significant direct and indirect economic benefits capable of being unlocked as a result of greater adoption. Plastics in the Bioeconomy is the first published comprehensive research into the current and potential future size of the UK’s compostables packaging market.
