Adam Griffiths

CEng (MIMechE), BEng, MSc.
Principal Consultant, Waste Technical Team

Adam is a chartered mechanical engineer with over 13 years’ experience in the waste and recycling industry. He has experience in all aspects of project delivery from tendering and bidding for projects, design, project management and delivery under CDM, and commissioning and process engineering of new facilities.

As part of Ricardo’s waste technical team, Adam has undertaken a wide range of projects for clients including local authorities, private waste operators, WRAP, law firms and investors. These include owner’s engineer roles for Material Recovery Facilities (MRF), writing technical specifications for waste processing infrastructure, due diligence appraisals of facilities for potential investors and providing expert opinion on mechanical processing for a number of waste streams including glass processing, construction and demolition (C&D) waste, residual waste via Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT) and incinerator bottom ash. In addition Adam has lead projects exploring new and developing sectors in the waste market deploying alternative waste treatments such as the capture and deployment of aquaculture waste sludges and treatment of absorbent hygiene products. This has given him a wide view of approaches to waste processing across a range of sectors and applications.

Prior to joining Ricardo Energy & Environment Adam worked for several of the UK’s major waste management companies including Biffa and Shanks (now Renewi) in process engineering and project/design management roles. These roles have given him an in-depth understanding of a number of waste industry technologies including MRF, AD, MBT, autoclave, Combined Heat and Power (CHP), composting, and more. It also provided experience in the operational aspects of running a large process plant and ensuring compliance with regulators such as the Environment Agency, OFGEM and the Animal and Plant Health Agency.

Adam’s practical hands-on knowledge of process plant from concept through to commissioning and steady state operations in a heavily regulated and safety critical environment gives him a good awareness of the challenges which can arise day to day in the waste and recycling industry.
