Darren’s current role is Director for Australia, leading Ricardo Energy & Environment’s market entry strategy. He is responsible for a growing Australian team based in Queensland and more recently New South Wales and expanding.
Darren, a chartered waste manager and has around 20 years’ experience working in waste management and is an experienced project leader in the capacity as Project Director for over 40 projects, and as Project Manager for over 80 projects. He has undertaken many waste projects on behalf of Councils, Regional, State and National Governments in the UK, Australasia, Isle of Man, Hong Kong and most recently in Cambodia. These have principally been around waste strategy and policy development/review, creating the business case for service change, data management, assessing the performance of waste collection and treatment systems and delivering national training courses.
Originally starting from a theoretical perspective, where his PhD investigated how households behaved on different systems and why and then translated this knowledge into practical guidance, through delivery of kerbside recycling service design best practice guidance documents for CIWM, WRAP and Defra in the UK and then national training courses on strategy development and waste technologies for state governments overseas. Darren was the original inventor and domain expert of Naus (TM), a cloud-based scenario tool working with Mandalay. More recently Darren has been involved in the delivery of circular economy projects informing policy development, community strategy creation and business case assessment.
Darren has led several circular projects recently in Australia where he supported the NSW EPA in the development of their circular economy policy, through conducting an international review of best practice and evaluated the barriers, enablers and synergies for implementation in NSW, resulting in a report of potential policy and program options for the short, medium and long term. On a more practical level, over the past 12 months, Darren has supported Lendlease, an international property management and construction group, to develop a strategy to achieve their vision of becoming the first circular economy development in Australia. Following an assessment of transport, water, waste and energy flows a significant number of opportunities for circularity were identified across their development and a clear roadmap for implementation provided. Darren wrote the strategy and action plan which specified targets and how they would be measured, clear objectives and priorities and identified a series of circular opportunities for the 20,000-home development.
In Australia and the UK, Darren has written waste statutory strategy guidance documents, and industry information guides and as an experienced trainer worked with both industry association in New Zealand (Waste Minz) and in Australia, Waste Management Association of Australia (WMAA) to design and deliver a series of national waste training courses on waste strategy development and Alternative Waste Technologies.
Darren has spoken widely at practical waste management conferences in the UK and across the globe, most recently as keynote and published in both the academic and practical press and media.
