TAKING RESOURCES FORWARD

Ricardo Energy & Environment and  Recycling & Waste World are hosting a series of four  FREE webinars addressing topical issues such as the circular economy, waste treatment solutions, due diligence and integrated waste management strategies.

Webinar schedule

Three- weekly collections, they work!

Extending the frequency of residual waste collection has been gaining increasing momentum in recent years across the UK. At present the number of local authorities providing three weekly residual waste collections is well into double figures most of whom have based their decisions on increasing recycling levels and delivering financial savings. This webinar will look at our own independent research and share the insights from 1 or 2 of the authorities who have pioneered this transition. The session will cover:

  • The scene today – the pioneers, and what did they do (and why?)
  • The threats and opportunities to extended frequency collections?
  • What are the likely impacts for authorities, contractors & residents?
  • Our recommendations for successful implementation of extended frequency collections.

City strategies and managing waste effectively in transition economies.

According to the United Nations 54% of the world’s population currently lives in urban areas, a proportion that is expected to increase to 66% by 2050.

Increased urbanisation and an ever growing population means that cities are being put under more and more pressure. Existing infrastructure is put under pressure and new infrastructure can be difficult to plan for in space that needs to compete with accommodation, business and other essential services.

This webinar will provide case study examples of our work with cities and the process that city leaders have gone through to ensure appropriate access to waste management services for all including:

  • Strategy and vision for waste management – moving beyond protecting health and the environment to securing resources for the future?
  • Understanding waste arisings and material flow
  • Engaging stakeholders so that there is a shared understanding and responsibility to help drive forward the new strategy / solutions
  • Delivering solutions that are appropriate to the local situation including new and traditional technologies.

Real world circular economy solutions

With the circular economy having gained real traction over the last 2 years, most noticeably in Scotland, this webinar will provide detailed insights as to what the key opportunities are at national, city and organisational level. As part of our work with Zero Waste Scotland and other partners in Scotland Ricardo Energy  & Environment have been identifying, scoping, developing and delivering many circular economy projects across all levels of the economy from individual business models (leasing, deposit return schemes, supply chain management) to national and sector-level strategies.

This webinar will be led by Jamie Pitcairn, our lead Circular Economy practitioner, and will draw on a couple of private sector case studies (tbc) covering the following topics:

  • A review of the best circular economy business models and what makes them so good
  • A circular procurement strategy: why procurement is fundamental to the circular economy (case study: Blackwood)
  • The bioeconomy: the phenomenal opportunities available through better utilisation of our bioresources (case study ZWS & IBioIC).
