What is the Virtual Island Summit?
Organised by Island Innovation, The Virtual Island Summit is a free and entirely online event on 7-13 September, designed to connect global islands to share their common experiences. Speakers and attendees represent island communities from around the globe, including the Arctic, Caribbean, Europe, Indian Ocean, Pacific Islands, and South America. The event emphasises the need for input and partnerships from across the private, public, academic and NGO sectors to develop resilient, sustainable and prosperous islands.

Energy dependence - a common issue among islands
Many island states have historically been dependent on imported fossil fuels for power generation, however reliance on these imports can lead to high macroeconomic vulnerability from volatile fuel prices and high costs of electricity for island consumers.

A growing number of island states are preparing for fundamental changes to their energy mix through the development of Integrated Resource Plans (IRPs) and new power generation plans. Transitioning to clean power generation can provide island states with improved energy security and independence, support local economic development, and combat climate change and other negative local environmental impacts.
