Project: Scottish Soils
Client: Scottish Government
Solution: Database and Website
The Scottish Soils Database and Website project is the development of a pilot national website for soils supported by a database holding spatial and attribute data from a range of sources.
Like any other maps, soil maps display the distribution of features across the land. Soil maps are produced by field surveyors who examine soil profiles and draw boundaries between different soil types. The mapping methods have evolved over time, making use of new techniques such as aerial photography and satellite-based Global Positioning Systems (GPS).
The SSDW can be used to generate summaries of soils data and contextual information at a basic level of detail that is easily interpreted by non-experts or, alternatively, users can ‘drill-down’ to extract and analyse data using Open source interactive, geographical, tools.
