UK hydrocarbon monitoring network

Ricardo supported the UK's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) to achieve compliance with the European Air Quality Directive.

To support the compliance DEFRA needed to determine the concentration of a range of hydrocarbon species in ambient air at a wide range of locations throughout the UK. Ricardo designs and operates the UK's first fully automated hydrocarbon monitoring network and have developed it to include:

  • Automatic monitoring of a wide range of hydrocarbon species at hourly resolution
  • Use of unique pattern recognition software (MatchFinder) used to reliably identify compounds
  • Pumped sampling and analysis of benzene for EU Directive compliance monitoring
  • Data analysis and reporting
