Policy support to UK Government on measures to improve air quality

Ricardo supported the UK's Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) to identify and appraise road transport policy measures to improve air quality - focusing on nitrogen dioxide (NO2). The objective of the project was to develop screening process to provide the evidence to support updated national air quality plan, including predicting air quality levels under various policies, such as low emission zones and sustainable transport measures across the UK.

Ricardo's air quality and transport experts provided modelling of how key parameters of the road transport fleet may change through to 2020 for factors such as running costs cars, vans, heavy goods vehicles and buses. A screening tool was develop to enable the quantification of the effect of measures on the emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and  on the concentration of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) at over 9,000 roadsides receptors in the UK.
