Feasibility and Viability of Landfill Mining and Reclamation in Scotland

The study considers the potential to mine and reclaim materials from Scottish landfills in general, but also gives particular consideration to the potential to reclaim materials from the oil-shale spoil heaps (bings) in West Lothian. No documented landfill mining has taken place in Scotland to date, although some reclamation of material from its bings has been undertaken, including within West Lothian. Download PDF.

Feasibility and Viability of Landfill Mining and Reclamation in Scotland

This scoping study was undertaken by Ricardo Energy & Environment on behalf of Zero Waste Scotland (ZWS) in the period August 2012 to April 2013. The study was commissioned to assist ZWS and the Scottish Government in the feasibility assessment of the potential for the mining and reclamation of materials from landfill sites in Scotland. The study considers the potential to mine and reclaim materials from Scottish landfills in general, but also gives particular consideration to the potential to reclaim materials from the oil-shale spoil heaps (bings) in West Lothian.
